This book was absolutely adorable, and such a perfect addition to the LGBTQ canon for kids. It is extremely realistic in the struggles of a normal middle school viewpoint, with the added tumult of going against heteronormativity, i.e. Mattie realizing she has a crush on Gemma, and her confusion and fear of teasing if her crush is discovered by her classmates. I adored the supporting characters, both literally (meaning the background) and figuratively (meaning they were loving and nonjudgmental). There is an amazing moment when the teacher explains why "That's gay" is an inappropriate insult, and Mattie's sister Cara explains that liking a girl is no different than liking a boy, and crushes are embarrassing either way. Plus, Tessa spewing Shakespearean insults every other page is hilarious. Five stars!!
