I hadn't read any other books in the Old Man's War series when I picked this up. I wasn't even aware that it was part of a series at the time. I recommend this book even if you don't feel like getting invested in the whole series, because it's a fantastic read all on its own. This book was my introduction to John Scalzi's writing, and I think that it showcases him at his best. You'll find this book especially interesting if you like science fiction that explores psychological questions. What would it be like for the human mind to be connected to a hive-mind from birth? What if that mind had also been cloned from somebody else's? How would such a person see the world, and themselves? Sure, the book is also packed with action and impossible to put down, but I think Scalzi's real strength as a writer is in the way he delves deep into questions about the human mind and personal identity.
