If you enjoyed the movie, then you have to read the book! The book provides a lot more detail and background information about the beloved and not so beloved characters and the kingdoms. Buttercup is very empty headed and child like for the most part in the book, I did not enjoy her character that much. Way too much time was spent on her beauty and looks.... her personality is totally lacking and she is just an empty shell for the most part. I totally enjoyed reading up on Westley, Inigo and Fezzik. They certainly have a lot of interesting stories and adventures leading up to the time we are introduced to them in the story. Pirates, fencing, romance, fighting, double dealings, torture....what else can you expect besides an amazing adventure?! Although there are times when Westley is just a little too much for me, like given how smart he is and how good of a fighter, he sometimes seems too dominant and overpowering against Buttercup. One point that bothered me was how in the author kept inserting himself into the storyline just when it was getting interesting. Although I do appreciate not having to read 15 pages of the royal's journey and packing :P
