Oh, my gosh—I would have missed this book if Oprah hadn’t selected it for her book club. Told by different people in the story, a marriage is ripped apart by an unjust legal system. Put in prison for a rape he didn’t commit, Roy and his wife, Celestial, movingly tell the story of what happens to their marriage during his imprisonment. The story is often told in letters written back and forth between them. Celestial’s doll-making business continues to grow as does she as a woman. She falls in love with a boy she’s known for ever, and when Andre’s voice is added, the story and pain grow stronger. For me a white woman living among white people this was a chance to see what modern middle-class life is like for blacks in the South.
