Outstanding. Gerard Depardieu has long been one of my favorite French actors, and in this 1998 version of Alexandre Dumas' classic, he is in perfect form. His portrayal of Edmond Dantes is powerful and emotionally vivid. Ornella Muti does a fine job as his lost love Mercedes, and the other roles are also splendidly done; in particular, Dantes' servant Bertuccio, played by Italian actor-director Sergio Rubini, is exceptional. The resolution at the end of the film felt slightly rushed, but overall this is a wonderful adaptation of Dumas' classic tale of revenge. This is a French, not an American version, so if you're looking for flash over substance, this is probably not your cup of tea. If you appreciate a more authentic emotional experience, I highly recommend it.
