It's a superhero manga that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet has more heart to it than you would think. Great for people who don't really read a lot of manga.

Young continues with the over-the-top, outrageously violent adventures of Gert. The chapters in this volume feel more like self-contained stories than the first, but they are all still just as horrendously enjoyable.

Comment:

Konrath is certainly the man of many genres and his attempt at spy/assassin action-thriller is a good one. With a strong, female lead it is akin to a James Bond story if James Bond were a femme fatale, and could fight better. Does feel like a "Book One" at parts, but I'm intrigued and excited enough to want to continue with the trilogy. If you already enjoy reading Konrath, this will not disappoint.

"I Hate Fairyland" is a gristly, unique, dark, delightful take on a little girl going to a fairyland--and getting stuck there. Young does a wonderful job telling a story and creating a world full of wit, sarcasm, and just enough bloodshed to keep you turning the page. The illustrations are also phenomenal and bring the characters and setting to life (at least until Gretchen kills them). The intended audience does seem to be adults, although the only reason for that is the cartoon-ish, albeit excessive, violence. Really, it does feel like you are reading a cartoon for adults. I cannot wait for the second volume to come out.

A gorgeously illustrated first volume in a new series. It begins in the aftermath of a huge event, so you always having this creeping sensation that you're missing information. But once you get more into the book details present themselves and you can't wait for a new piece to the puzzle. To me, it makes for good world-building. Also available on Hoopla.

Fun way to teach kids about perspective and point of view. Younger kids may miss the message, but will enjoy the fun artwork that accompanies each character's viewing of the cat. Good book for parents to read with their children.

There are plenty of books that look at the first day of school from the point of view of the child. This books tackles those same nerves and worries from the viewpoint of the school. Adults and older kids will appreciate the humor and thoughts the school has, and will probably recognize them as the same thoughts they once had. Younger kids will also most likely be able to relate to both the school and the kids that go to it.Very clever and heartfelt; this is a great read for anyone who has had (or will have) those first-day-jitters.

Having not read the synopsis, definitely not what I was expecting. If you are looking for a new Batman adventure, you may be a bit disappointed. However, if you are interested in reading a semi-memoir about someone who was a part of the "Batman: Animated series" cartoon (though, not the focus of the book) this is one to pick up. I found myself starting out skeptical, and then getting engrossed at the great combination of story-line and illustrations.

The mood throughout the book is definitely on the dark side. I will say that the story is slow to build up and takes a bit to get going, but worth the wait. I personally didn't find it as gruesome and horrific as it claims to be, but I may very well be jaded. Crouch's characters will cross paths with J.A. Konrath's Jack Daniels if you are reading that series too.

Comment:

This is an interesting take on Gods and mythology in a modern setting. I like that when the Gods return everyone knows about them and you have, essentially, two camps: those that follow and worship them (in the same light that people worship celebrities); and those that question if they are actually who they say they are. It creates interesting discussion on how we as a society would act and react in the same situation. I also enjoyed that the pantheon is heavily diverse. Going in I was expecting Greek and Norse deities, aka "the usual." Instead there seems to be more gods from the myths of cultures I've never heard of. Admittedly, this makes it both very intriguing and frustrating (since I don't know what to expect from them). The artwork is phenomenal and I can't wait to continue with the series.
